At this moment in DC networks are used switchgears which were put into operation several decades ago. Worn-out switching devices and outdated control systems reached the end of their service life and don't ensure power supply reliability with continuously increasing requirements to it.
The main reason of using the outdated equipment is a lack of costs for its total renewal. Modernization (retrofit) of switchgears through replacement of outdated components for the new ones is the best possible and efficient solution, as modernization costs are significantly increased by applying former equipment case and minimum expenses for deinstallation of the old equipment and installation of the new one.

Within the framework of switchgears modernization PLUTON offers modern high speed circuit breakers produced by Secheron and General Electric as a new switching device.
A new high speed circuit breaker is installed into the cubicle in position of disassembled circuit breaker, with connection to the existing conductor busbars and maintenance of safe operation, inspectability and maintainability.
Replacement of life-expired circuit breakers for UR and GERapid circuit breakers allows increasing power supply reliability and reduce operational costs for high speed circuit breakers maintenance.
Replacement of protection and control system in switchgears is carried out through replacement of control sections and high voltage sections.
Upon replacement of control section the old panel is dismounted. A new control section is equipped with automatic circuit breakers, B&R controller, converting module of SMTN-3 traction network monitoring system (in case of installation of SMTN-3 system). The section is also equipped with external connection terminal blocks, relays and contactors, microclimate control system.
Dismounting of the old panel is carried out above the circuit breaker section door and above the control section, and high voltage section is installed instead.
Contact busbars are placed in the high voltage section, which allows opening measuring circuits «+» and «-» when opening section door.
Herewith, potential contacts remain closed by insulation material, which provides safe access to all high voltage components: ammeter, feeder voltage sensor, measuring unit of SMTN-3 traction network monitoring system, voltage monitoring relay.
SMTN-3 traction network monitoring and protection system can be installed into modernized switchgear upon Customer's request.
Line testing device system (short circuits tester) can be installed into switchgear upon Customer's request.
The system allows detecting line impedance before actuation of high speed circuit breaker, with issuing prohibition on high speed circuit breaker actuation, in case if line impedance will be lower than set parameter.
System components are installed on dielectric small-size panel, which is built into existing cubicle. This solution provides convenient inspection and maintainability.
Upon Customer's request, in the upgraded switchgear is possible to replace spare busbar switch. For this purpose, two disconnectors EST 1000 or EST 2500 with motor drive are installed instead of spare busbar switch.
Further, operating busbar disconnector can also be replaced. For this purpose, one disconnector EST 1000 or EST 2500 with motor drive is installed instead of disassembled disconnector with manual linkage.
Installation of disconnector with motor drive keeps possibility of manual control with no power supply voltage, and provides smppth and noiseless disconnector operation .
